HARLEY HARK BACK TO PAST

Stunning new machines adopt a classic bygone style

WHAT A LOOKER: The new Softail SlimNEXT weekend will see two new Harley-Davidsons unveiled in Irish showrooms. The new additions to the line-up - a new Sportster Seventy Two and a Softail Slim - were revealed by the Harley-Davidson in the States on Thursday. The new Seventy Two, priced from €12,345 on the road, is based on the Sportster XL1200 series, but is styled with a respectful nod to bygone days, with Hard Candy Big Red Flake paint, ape-style handlebars and its narrow whitewall tyres.

The new Seventy-Two "harks back to a custom culture that still percolates today along Whittier Boulevard, the legendary street in East Los Angeles, also known as Route 72", says Harley-Davidson.

"It's here the 'custom chop' style emanated from California, across America and then around the world. The new Slim, priced from
€20,340 on the road, slots into the existing Softail range and is "styled to thrill with its pared down stance".

Less is more with this style of bike, so the Slim gets a narrow rear end and trimmed front fender. The theme continues with fewer covers, a solo seat, smaller wheels and tyre sizes, and minimal chromed parts. The Softail profile and iconic Harley-Davidson style recalls classic custom bobbers of the 1950s.

EXCITING: The new Seventy-TwoJeff Murphy, dealer principal for Harley-Davidson Dublin, said: "This is going to be a really exciting weekend for us.Today was our first look at the new bikes and they're stunning - we're sure they're going to be hugely popular with new and existing customers. Our open weekend is one of the biggest events on the calendar and it will be a fantastic opportunity to get visitors' opinions."

Lenny Burns, dealer principal for Waterford Harley-Davidson, added: "The two new bikes continue the strong customisation theme that Harley-Davidson has had in recent years and gives us great impetus to carry on working with local riders to make their bike completely unique to them."

Open days take place in Dublin and Waterford this coming Friday to Sunday (February 10 to 12).
