Menor Miracle
Beautiful island is the shining jewel of the Med
Where to go on holidays... it's always a tough call. And even more so now that we DEFINITELY can only afford one sun holiday a year! I have always leaned towards the Spanish mainland and have been lucky enough to enjoy many memorable trips to places like Salou, Marbella and Benalmadena on the mainland and (when I was much younger) Ibiza in the Balearic islands.
Some resorts, for obvious reasons are better suited to different age groups and circumstances. Now that I've reached what is loosely termed 'middle age', I tend to look for quieter destinations - ones that are ideally suited for couples and families with young children.
And I'm delighted to say, we struck gold on our latest trip abroad. We discovered the beautiful island of Menorca, set like a jewel in the Mediterranean, off the east coast of mainland Spain and just north of Majorca. The island offers much more than just a week or two by the pool, there is everything from cycling to horse riding, karting to waterparks as well as many excellent excursions across the
island.
These include visits to a nature reserve, a gin distillery or the commercial capital of Mahon on the east.We stayed at Cala Blanca on the west of the island and near the historic harbour town of Ciutadella. It's an old port with its own gothic cathedral, palaces and narrow cobbled streets which hide stylish boutiques and cafes. Down the steps from the main square lies the port with its brightly coloured fishing boats, lively restaurants and bars on one side and the nightclubs on the other. And it was from this spot that we boarded the 'Ocean Cat' for a sail-cruise around the south of the island. It was a truly wonderful experience and one I would recommend to all.
At a reasonable price of €48 per adult (€24 for age 7-14, free for 0-6) you enjoy a day on the ocean (9.30am-4.30pm) stopping off at various beaches and coves for swimming and snorkelling (they provide mask and snorkel free) along the way. Lunch is also provided on board on what can truly be described as a 'once-in-a-lifetime experience' for most of us. Our hotel, the Blanc Palace Resort was just perfect, with everything we could possibly need on site and with a large team of very courteous, helpful and friendly staff.
With six swimming pools (including slide pool and a kiddies pool) as well as its own private beach, it was ideal for those lazy, hazy days of idle relaxation. The beach was set in a small sandy cove, with the gentle lapping of the water an invite to swim with the fish and float on the clear, sun-sparkled Mediterranean Sea.
Within the resort, there is a supermarket, games room, children's play area, gymnasium (including Jacuzzis and saunas), solarium, disco as well as a large restaurant and poolside bars - not to mention the large upstairs lounge-bar where there is nightly entertainment. For many of the fellow guests, they chose to laze around the pool during the day, breaking their sun-tanning only to enjoy a long lunch, then availing of the bar before heading off for a siesta before dinner. Nice way to spend a day.
We stayed on an 'all-inclusive' package, which costs €245 extra to include all meals, drinks and entertainment - it's great value for the times we're in. Consider what you would pay for an eat-all-you-want breakfast, lunch and dinner every day for seven days as well as free drink all day, every day - this includes soft drinks, teas, coffees, wines, beer, spirits and mixers. The only drink you pay for are
select imports like Jameson, Smirnoff, Bacardi. Local whiskies, vodkas and rums are free. Bar snacks like cakes and biscuits are also included. It really is great value.
And if you want to get out and about, it is a very safe place for a quiet after-dinner stroll to a nearby bar to mingle with the friendly locals. If you fancy to stray a bit further, the bus service is frequent and cheap but you must remember to purchase tickets in advance (ask at your hotel). As regards heading to the nearest town (the afore-mentioned Ciutadella) it's only around €6 per journey. So,
all-in-all everything is there on your doorstep.
For me (as ever!), the highlight of the holiday was the food. I have said it before, but how is it that the fruit and vegetables in these resorts always taste better than what we eat at home? The lettuce crisper, apples crunchier, grapes bigger, tomatoes juicier. Maybe it's the bright colours and large variety... maybe it's just my imagination being swayed by the fact that all seems perfect in the world, when one is enjoying a break in a tropical paradise.
Anyway, the food was terrific, plenty of fresh fish for lunch and evening meal (a terrific selection of mussels, sea bass, cod, prawns and octopus, among others, on a daily basis. Pork is always good in the Balearics, as is chicken and, of course, the fantastic paellas. The highlight of my culinary delights was the evening suckling pig was on the menu - I feasted like a king!
So top marks to this wonderful resort hotel, I will be back.
