KINGDOM RUSH

iPad, €1.49

SENSE OF HUMOUR:Superb battles in Kingdom RushTower defence titles have seen a surge in popularity since the likes of Plants Vs Zombies have conquered the mass market in recent times. In what's becoming an increasingly competitive genre, it's often the fun factor or creativity within the gameplay constraints that set titles apart, and Kingdom Rush perfectly presents itself as a case in point.

The fantastic fantasy setting for your tower battles bring a delightful array of medieval enemies on to your iPad, from devilish demons to gung-ho knights, not to mention some huge boss battles along the way. Be warned, though, this is no walk in the park and you will die - a lot. But what will keep you coming back for more is that sense of humour that keeps you hooked.

PERFECT EGG TIMER

iPhone, €1.59

PERFECT EGG TIMER iPhone, €1.59Boiling an egg isn't always as easy as it sounds. This is a simple app allowing you to key in the properties of your egg and assist you in your quest for perfection. All you have to do is tell it what size the egg is, the temperature of it and the altitude of where you are - well, it all affects how an egg is cooked!

Then input how you like your egg and the countdown begins for how long you should cook it to achieve your ideal yolk.

SOUL CALIBUR

iPad €9.99

As fighters go, Soul Calibur offers gamers that slightly different scrapping experience with the addition of filthy great weapons to wield during your one-on-one battles, compared to simply bare knuckle brawling. It has carved a niche for itself over the past decade, and now the touchscreen tablet iteration opens up the sword-swiping possibilities for a whole new generation of gamer.

The subsequent fights with an intriguing cast of powerful characters are enjoyable enough, but once the will to pummel a computer opponent fades, the absence of a multiplayer option will make you wonder whether the price tag is truly justified.

Lightning Strikes Twice

Sequel makes swift return to Fantasy form

FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 starstarstar PS3

THE STORY CONTINUES: Final Fantasy XIII-2 has had some subtle refinements Final Fantasy XIII had its fair share of critics, even within the camp of previously staunch Japanese-RPG fans. An unnecessary digression to linear storyline progression and levelling up restrictions were just two of the 'features' that didn't cut the mustard, but Lightning and her cast of fantasy friends and foes are back to set the record straight. That's arguably a punchier story than XIII-2's narrative, which, despite the standard quota of stunning animated cutscenes, falls a little short of earlier FF titles.

More open-world options return and the leash is off the levelling, as the series makes a swift return to form. Developed by Square Enix's 1st Production Department, the game is a direct sequel to the 2010 title and takes place three years after its events. Lightning has disappeared into an unknown world and her younger sister Serah Farron and a young man named Noel Kreiss attempt to find her.

Players take control of the two would-be rescuers and soon enough the non-linear design of the game shines through. It's evident that the developers want you to weigh up options and explore environments. Players will be able to revisit old areas as well as new areas at various time periods, showing changes in appearance.

SEARCH QUEST: Serah FerronIn terms of the combat experience, at each new turn, battles separate Noel from bringing Serah back to Lightning. These skirmishes and their systems will be familiar to those who played the previous instalment but there are some improvements. One of the more noticeable changes is the fact that Serah and Noel are the only playable human characters with the third slot ready for a monster ally.

If, in the course of your adventure you defeat a monster, you have the opportunity to then tame it. Each of these vile vermin has a specific role in battle as well as special skills. Each monster can also level up along with the main protagonists by consuming items.
The battle system sees more subtle refinements such as the return of the action gauge - with role-specific abilities that take up parts of that gauge. Auto-battle makes a welcome return and makes informed, smart decisions based on information you've gathered on
enemies. Paradigm Shifts (changing roles mid-fight) happen quickly and quicken the pace of battle nicely.

The game's presentation is fantastic, with bright and colourful environments and the nowstandard purple and pink is splashed throughout. Excellent acting has been employed by the voice talent, with the leads and supporting characters doing a great job. This is supplemented nicely with a great, engaging soundtrack.

So, there is a lot to be happy about if you're a FF fan. However, with the fine-tuning that's gone on with the upgrade, collection and battle systems and the noticeable introduction of non-linear play, the game loses the plot (no pun intended) when it comes to the narrative. It's true that a previous playthrough of FF XIII will enhance the experience on Part 2, but overall this is an RPG for a niche
gamer audience who love their convoluted storylines, cinematic entertainment and, ultimately, a game that they must commit their life to for a week or two in order to reap the biggest rewards.

BUNDLE OF SHEER FUN

METAL GEAR SOLID HD COLLECTION

XBOX 360

AMAZING:Solid 2In these times of austerity, who isn't looking for top quality gaming at bargain prices? So let's extend some recessionary-inspired thanks to Konami, who are treating every console gamer to a trio of top titles featuring the infamous Solid Snake.

Bundling Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is no mean feat in itself, but they've also been updated with HD visuals to boot.

Of course, if you haven't played through these truly incredible adventures already, you have an immense gaming session lying in wait, while seasoned fans of the series should take this graphical update and bargain bundling opportunity to relive the hundreds of brilliant moments that defined the last decade of gaming.

Still a genius showcase for how stealth gaming should be designed, this disc is simply unmissable.
